Around 2020, I first started exploring bespoke fitness gyms in Berlin. Back then, I was part of a private members’ club in the city, but I quickly realized it wasn’t giving me what I needed. After some big life changes, fitness became more than just a way to stay in shape. It became grounding, restorative—an anchor in my routine.

That’s when I began trying out Berlin’s boutique fitness scene. I used ClassPass to jump between studios, enjoying the freedom to explore without committing to just one. One day, I discovered a new gym that had opened in a space I knew well: the old post office where I’d gone to send letters when I first moved to Berlin.

Walking into Hagius for the first time, I was struck by its aesthetic—both familiar and innovative, a space reimagined by Timothy and Nicolas Hagius in collaboration with the renowned architectural duo Gonzalez Haase. The vision of the Hagius brothers was to redefine fitness by merging physical training with a holistic approach to well-being, creating a multi-sensory environment where the body, mind, and emotions are seamlessly integrated. A wooden boxing bag designed by Sarah Illenberger, paired with gymnast rings made of light, added an artistic and unique touch. I left my shoes on the same stone steps I used to climb years ago, now complemented by brushed steel furnishings and ash-toned wood with a natural matte finish. The minimalist design, balanced with high ceilings and exposed ductwork nestled in reflective silver insulation, created an immediate sense of calm.

This photograph captures a serene and minimalist hallway, characterized by its white walls, arched doorways, and pale wood flooring. The hallway is set against a backdrop of stark, featureless white walls, punctuated by three arches that lead to various areas within the space. The central doorway frames a striking tan circle on the wall behind it, while another doorway to the right appears to be closed off with what resembles a piece of wood or drywall. The pale wood flooring adds warmth and texture to the otherwise monochromatic setting, creating a sense of balance between light and shadow. Natural light pours in from the left side of the image, illuminating the space and casting subtle shadows on the walls. Overall, this photograph presents a peaceful and contemplative atmosphere, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its simplicity and elegance.

A New Approach to Fitness

What stood out to me most was the intimacy of the experience. Classes were purposefully small, giving everyone room to focus while receiving personalized attention. My first session was with Karimu, a movement instructor my wife had been raving about for weeks. She was obsessed with his class, and by the end of it, I could see why.

It wasn’t just a workout—it was what I’d later call an “intelligent workout.” It felt designed to engage not only my body but also my mind, incorporating elements that challenged my reactions and improved my coordination in a thoughtful, deliberate way. That’s how I started describing the classes at Hagius to friends. These sessions weren’t about brute force or pushing through pain; they focused on aligning your body and mind while nurturing overall well-being. That ethos carried into every class I tried, from movement to boxing. It became clear that Hagius wasn’t just about physical fitness; it was about holistic health. This philosophy is also reflected in their personal training approach, where trainers collaborate with osteopaths to develop customized plans, ensuring you receive guidance tailored to your unique needs.

Mental Health and the Power of Design

The past few years, shaped by personal challenges and global shifts, have brought mental health to the forefront for many of us. For me, self-compassion and self-love have become non-negotiable priorities. Hagius embodies those values seamlessly.

I later discovered the concept of neuroaesthetic design—the idea that spaces can profoundly influence our emotions and mental state. At Hagius, this principle is brought to life in every detail. The contrast of brushed steel fixtures against warm ash wood creates a harmonious balance, while subtle touches, like the carefully chosen scents for the water spray used when cleaning the yoga mats after use, enhance the sensory experience. The lighting design, featuring two-tone lamps with white and orange LED bulbs, achieves an ideal combination of brightness and warmth. The mix sets my wife lovingly crafts for her classes add a deeply personal touch to the environment, shaping an atmosphere that deeply resonates with participants. The carefully curated music enhances the rhythm of movements, aligning with the mood and flow of each session to create a truly immersive experience. Instructors adjust the controlled lighting system directly from their phones to change the atmosphere and create specific moods during classes, sometimes dimming the lights entirely while incorporating heightened music tracks or sounds for the calming finale to make the space feel truly special.

This image depicts a spacious, well-lit room with a large circular mat in the center, surrounded by three arched openings on the back wall. The light-colored wood floor and green mats create a neutral atmosphere, while white curtains adorn the arches. The ceiling features exposed pipes and ductwork, suggesting an industrial setting. Two speakers mounted on either side of the room add to the ambiance. Overall, the image exudes a sense of calmness and serenity, evoking the feeling of being in a peaceful environment.

A Community Beyond Fitness

Years later, I’m now a devoted member of Hagius. My wife ‘Seanal Yu’, who fell in love with the space, even became an instructor and team lead here. She also strives to create safe space workshops within the BIPOC community, creating inclusivity and providing a platform for meaningful dialogue. These workshops are a natural extension of the sense of connection and support that Hagius embodies, further strengthening the gym’s role as a hub for both fitness and community building. What’s so special about Hagius isn’t just the gym itself but the sense of community it creates. In a world where everything feels transient—subscription-based, commitment-free—it’s refreshing to see the same faces returning to classes. It creates a sense of familiarity and belonging, making each visit feel more personal and connected. Friendships form, and it’s begun to feel like more than a gym—it’s a social hub. The instructors often stay and socialize after classes, building a genuine and meaningful connection that links the clients and the Hagius team, making everyone feel part of a shared community. Leaving shoes on the steps adds to the overall experience, symbolizing a shared respect for the space and building a sense of belonging among members. It feels almost like a big sleepover, where everyone leaves their shoes outside the door.

A Thank You to Hagius

Maybe this is a thank-you letter to Hagius. It’s a place that has contributed to my physical strength, mental clarity, and sense of connection. The well-crafted spaces inspire focus and calm, the supportive environment builds genuine relationships, and the gym’s holistic ethos promotes both personal growth and well-being. Hagius combines thoughtfully designed spaces with a welcoming atmosphere, offering more than just fitness—it’s a place where personal growth and connection thrive.

For anyone visiting for the first time, my hope is that you let yourself fully experience it—the design, the care, the ethos. Because when you do, you’ll understand why this gym is so much more than just a place to work out.
