Zita Cobb and the Fogo Island Inn: A Symbol of Sustainability and Community.
On the edge of the North Atlantic, on one of Canada’s most remote islands, Fogo Island, stands the Fogo Island Inn – a hotel that impresses not only with its extraordinary architecture but also with its unique history. At the heart of this story is Zita Cobb, a daughter of the island who returned with a vision after a successful career in the high-tech industry: the economic and cultural revitalization of her homeland.

Zita Cobb, raised as one of seven siblings in a fishing family on Fogo Island, left the island to study economics. After an impressive career, she returned as a multimillionaire, not to retire but to give back to her community. Her approach was innovative and sustainable: she founded the Shorefast Foundation with her brothers and opened the Fogo Island Inn in 2013 to revitalize the local economy and culture weakened by the collapse of the cod fishery.
A Luxury Hotel with a Social Mission
Designed by Canadian-Norwegian architect Todd Saunders, the Fogo Island Inn is known for its modern minimalist architecture that incorporates elements of local building culture. The hotel is more than just accommodation; it’s a social enterprise. All profits go to the Shorefast Foundation, which supports local projects and promotes the economic self-sufficiency of island residents.
Integration of Art and Community
Zita Cobb’s goal is to connect art and community. She supports artists through residency programs and involves local craftsmen in the design of the hotel. From handmade quilts to locally crafted furniture, every detail in the Fogo Island Inn tells the story of the island and its inhabitants.
Nature Experience and Sustainability
Guests of the Fogo Island Inn can enjoy unique nature experiences, from iceberg watching to guided hikes. The philosophy of sustainable tourism is at the forefront, with environmental protection and the promotion of local culture going hand in hand.
